Technical Institute

Photo by JoshuaThe Dagoretti Corner Youth Program, renamed Dagoretti Corner Technical Institute, is the vocational training arm of Dagoretti Corner Self-Help Group. We train young people in carpentry, motor mechanics, auto electrics, tailoring, and handcrafts. So far we have trained over 1000 young people.

In 2004-5, 24 motor mechanics, 6 carpentry and 5 Tailoring students sat and passed the government Trade Test set by the Directorate of Industrial Training. The students were sponsored by Pamoja Child Trust, plan International, free Pentecostal Assemblies of Kenya, United Nations (Refugee Office) and Deliverance Church. 60% were unable to pay fees because they come from poor families and are orphans.

In 2005-6 the institute had registered 18 students for motor mechanics and 4 auto electrics. There were no registration for 16 tailoring /weaving because most of the students were being trained and given materials free of charge being HIV/AIDS positive. These HIV/AIDS students of tailoring embarked on making uniforms for school children and charge accordingly for their own support. The Institute provided four sewing machines, two weaving looms and 2 knitting machines. The weaving and knitting machines were provided by the courtesy of the Greater Harvest Trust and Syndal Baptist Church, Melbourne Australia. Four of the students have already died; and one is critically ill at the moment. The institute provides lunch for the HIV/AIDS victims Monday to Friday after the lunch fellowship prayers.
