Who we areThe Dagoretti Corner Self-Help group is organised and operated by the Dagoretti Corner Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev William Eyika and Mrs Grace Eyika. We exist to fight poverty, ignorance and disease amongst the poor. We are currently running a broad array of programs ranging from primary and secondary school education to support for victims of AIDS to vocational training programs in the fields of dressmaking, carpentry, motor mechanics and music. Our actions are based on the following beliefs:
Although we do provide some emergency relief aid where required, our focus is on long-term community development which brings lasting change, rather than on short-term relief which may result in continuing dependency. We do not at present arrange child sponsorship because of the difficulty in ensuring that children are treated equally. Instead, we encourage sponsorship of teachers, schools, pastors and churches. A number of children and youth involved in our programs are sponsored through other organisations.
